When did the distance education start in Eastern Mediterranean University?

EMUONLINE started in 2000 fall semester.

What programs are you offering over the Internet (undergraduate, graduate, seminar)? What is the number of courses offered?

We are offering undergraduate courses. EMUONLINE started with 4 courses from 4 different departments. We continued with 7 courses in spring 2001 and 4 courses in fall 2001.

How many students are taking courses through the Internet?

The number of the students depends on the number of courses offered and changes between 100 and 200 per semester.

Do you have other methods for distance education?

Our only method is delivery over Internet.

Do Internet courses include video or sound, if they include video or sound what are their formats? Which software are you using for capturing and editing video and sound?

Yes our courses include video and sound. Our multimedia format is Real Audio and Real Video. For capturing and editing video and sound we are using Real Producer software. We are also using Macromedia Flash for animations.

What are your campus network properties?

The campus has a total of 4Mbps Internet connection. Our internal campus network has a fiber-optic backbone with 155Mbps and 622Mbps ATM connections. Departmental LAN's consist of 10Mbps connections.

What are your distance education server properties? How are you handling concurrent connections to your servers?

Our server is Compaq Proliant ML-570 with 512 MB RAM and 36 GB RAID SCSI Hard Disk working on Microsoft Windows 2000 IIS5. Since our program is an asynchronous distance education program we don't have problems with concurrent connections.

What are your Internet connection properties and are you using any mirroring technique?

We are connected to the Internet with 2 Mbps through ULAKNET (Turkish National Academic & Research Network), and with a dedicated 2 Mbps satellite connection. We are not using any mirroring.

Which software are you using for web site creation and which software are you using for creation of online quizzes or exams?

We are using Dreamweaver and FrontPage for web site creation and for online quizzes we are using Hotpotatoes and Coursebuilder software packages.

Do you have Instructional Design Staff?

We assign a student assistant to each course and course materials are formatted and graphically designed by these student assistants.

What are your user connection properties (dialup, campus)?

We are expecting our users to be connected through our campus network.

What is the number of graduates from your distance education programs? What are their success rates and dropout rates?

We are only offering a small number of undergraduate courses and we are not offering complete online degree programs. The success and dropout rates of students in online courses are nearly the same as the traditional face-to-face education courses.

Are you using questionnaires for your distance education students?

Yes we are using questionnaires at the end of every semester. Students can fill questionnaires online or during their examinations. We are improving our services considering these questionnaires.

Are you using completely online exams for your courses or are your examinations regular examinations?

Midterm and final examinations are regular examinations and they constitute at least 80% of the final grade. Lecturers can perform online quizzes or may give online assignments for the other 20%.
